A Brief Intro of The Past and A Blind Guess of What’s Next

Young Fortune TellerWith senior thesis this year, I’ve been spending a lot of time trying to figure out what I am interested in. In the past, I’ve mostly found myself exploring sexuality, identity, decay/erosion, and choice. So I’d say those are things that I am interested in exploring. Recently I feel like I’ve gotten off course and strayed too far into the conceptual, so this semester I am really looking forward to returning to taking photographs.

I’m interested in exploring the role of “Fine Art” photography as we delve deeper into the digital movement. Digital photography blown open the doors for creative expression while saving people time and–after the technology caught up anyway–money. As is the case with most technological advancements, digital photography became more accessible and ubiquitous. This isn’t innately a bad thing, but I’m worried that the “craft” aspect of photography may no longer be as valued as it once was. This isn’t a new concern when media advance. Even when color photography came out, people initially thought you couldn’t do fine art photo in color, that Fine Art photography could only be in black and white. Well, as we know, this isn’t the case.

Anyway, I’m rambling. All of this is to say that I am hoping to explore this idea in my work. I am currently planning on interweaving my photographs in a video game that I will be building over the semester. I don’t know how to incorporate them yet, but I’m excited to see what happens.
